Police in Newark are on the search for a suspect that fired a weapon on a street in the city's West Ward that struck and injured a male on Saturday evening.
It happened at around 6:50 p.m. where police responded to a ShotSpotter activation that alerted police of gunfire on the East Orange-Newark border -800 block of South Orange Avenue.
East Orange Police arrived at the scene and were pointed in the direction by witnesses of Alexander Street and the Newark- Irvington Township side.
Police canvassing the area found a crime scene on Alexander and Lindsley Street where a male victim was located suffering a gunshot wound to the leg according to preliminary reports.
Newark Police took over the investigation while EMS transported the victim to University Hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries.
Police took a man into custody and charged him with the shooting.
The incident remains under investigation.
