Gunfire Strikes Dog in Newark's South Ward

Police in Newark are investigating a shooting that injured a dog in the city's South Ward Sunday morning. 

According to police, gunfire rang out in the vicinity of Madison Avenue and South 15th Street, sending officers to the scene around 5 a.m. 

Officials said police found several shell casings at the scene and a dog shot near 816 South 15th Street. 

Police say, officers checked the area for victims and requested information on potential hospital gunshot walk-in injuries, but both came back negative. 

The dog was transported by police to Oradell Animal Hospital for treatment. Its current condition could not be confirmed. 

The suspect fled the scene and is at large.
