Gunfire Near Newark School Sends Children Running for Cover During Recess

Newark New Jersey

"My 2nd grade boys just came home and told me that they were on the playground when this happened and everybody had to run in the building. My baby said he was scared and didn't want to get killed.  It just brought tears to my eyes (smh). I'm so happy all the babies are ok. Thank God." (Parent)

Multiple rounds of gunfire rang out earlier this afternoon near the 13th Avenue School where dozens of students  (as young as 7-years-old) were on the playground during recess. Students -with the assistance of staff members- were scrambled back into the building where a shelter in place status was established by administration according to parents.

Police arrived to the location where they set up a crime scene near 12th Ave. and South 9th Street. Authorities reportedly found a vehicle at that location struck by gunfire but no injured victim.

The shooting is under investigation by Newark Police.
