Gunfire Injures Woman in Newark's West Ward

A woman found suffering a gunshot wound inside a car in Newark's West Ward has police investigating the circumstances behind the incident.

Police were called to the vicinity of South 12th Street and 16th Avenue after receiving reports of an injured person. Shortly before arriving at the scene, a ShotSpotter activation indicated gunfire erupting in the 600 block of South 20th Street at around 11 p.m.

Officer converged on the area and found the badly injured female victim suffering a gunshot wound to the back at that location.

According to preliminary reports, police determined that the woman was struck on South 20th Street between 17th and 18th avenues after the woman confirmed the location.

EMS transported the alert and conscious victim to University Hospital where doctors began treating her injuries.

Police investigating at the crime scene located multiple shell casings according to reports.

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
