Police in Newark are investigating an early morning shooting that erupted in a section of the city's West Ward Sunday.
A ShotSpotter device alerted police of gunfire near 584 Springfield Avenue before 4:30 a.m.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found shell casings on the ground and other evidence that a shooting had occurred.
Police canvassed the neighborhood for victims, but no injuries were reported.
A Major Crimes Unit was called to the scene to assist in the investigation.
The suspect fled the scene and is at large.
