Gunfire Erupts Near Newark Fire Department Headquarters

Police in Newark are on the search for the suspect/s wanted for firing shots in the vicinity of The Newark Fire Headquarters on Thursday morning.

According to a statement released by Newark Police officials, the early morning incident happened at around 10:35 a.m. in the 1000 block of 18th Avenue where reports of shots fired sent about a dozen police officers to the scene.

Police officials say, during the incident, two females walked eastbound on 18th Avenue when one of them said they heard gunfire then felt something hit her right shoulder.

The victims reported that they did not see a suspect when they ran to the fire department headquarters for assistance.

According to authorities, a projectile also struck a parked car at the scene, but there were no injuries.

Police closed off 18th Avenue from Stuyvesant to Alexander for the police investigation.

Preliminary reports indicated that the shooting occurred about a block away from the fire headquarters and no fire officials/personnel were in immediate danger.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
