There is an active search for a suspect/s who opened fire on a vehicle occupied by several people on a highway in Newark early this morning.
According to initial reports from the scene, multiple rounds of gunfire that came from a vehicle, erupted on Interstate 78 eastbound (near the viaduct to 1&9 north to Rt. 21 north) exit 57 in Newark at around 2 a.m. sending police to the scene where cops located a vehicle struck by gunfire at that location.
The vehicle was reportedly occupied by four passengers, with one of them shot to the back reports said.
The victim was rushed to University Hospital where he underwent surgery and the extent of his injuries have not been released as of 5 a.m.
Early reports indicated that the victims were leaving a club in Elizabeth and returning home when suspects who were occupying a dark colored vehicle began to follow them into Newark, then shoot at them on the highway.
Police established a crime scene where they shut down all lanes on the highway after locating shell casings reports said.
The motive behind the shooting is under investigation.
