Acting Prosecutor Carolyn Murray is reporting a police involved shooting involving an off duty Essex County Corrections Officer. The incident occurred a little after 3a.m. on Pomona Avenue and Bergen Street in Newark.
The Corrections Officer, was exiting his private vehicle at the location when three gunman approached the officer. The suspects reportedly fired at the officer while the officer returned fire striking the suspects. A loaded firearm was found at the scene . Two of the suspects were taken to University Hospital and are listed as crictial . The third suspect fled the scene and was not apprehended. The Corrections Officer was taken to an area hospital and treated for a stress related medical condition.The Prosecutor's office believe robbery was the motive. Detectives are in the very early stage of the investigation. The investigation is being handled by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Task fore ,Professional Standards Bureau and Newark Police.
