Four Shot, One Dead in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable have announced that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this evening in Newark, NJ.  The incident occurred in the area of 19th Avenue and South 16th Street. One victim has been pronounced dead at University Hospital.

Three other victims are being treated for apparent non-life-threatening injuries, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

This incident, which occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
