Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announced that Alvin Mootoo, 53, of Orlando, Florida, has been sentenced to nine years in New Jersey State Prison for his role in a deadly crash in Paterson.

Mootoo was arrested on January 2, 2019, following an investigation into a fatal collision at the intersection of 18th Avenue and East 24th Street.
A jury trial, presided over by Superior Court Judge Marilyn C. Clark, took place during April and May 2025. On May 19, the jury found Mootoo guilty of second-degree reckless vehicular homicide and assault by auto.
On August 20, Judge Clark handed down the nine-year prison term on the homicide charge.
Under New Jersey law, Mootoo must serve 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
After his release, he will remain under parole supervision for three years.

As part of the sentence, Mootoo was ordered to pay $5,100 in restitution. He also received a concurrent 180-day sentence for the assault by auto conviction.
