Newark

By: Richard L. Smith

Newark firefighters responded to the Essex County Correctional Facility Thursday night after receiving reports of a fire inside a holding cell.

Reports say fire crews were dispatched to the correctional facility at 354 Doremus Avenue on October 22, where officers began investigating reports of a fire inside the jail.

Authorities reported a haze inside the facility, which correctional officers indicated was connected to the reported fire.

During the response, fire officials deployed a drone to assist with the investigation.

By approximately 11:13 p.m., fire officials reported that the haze was beginning to dissipate, although crews remained at the scene to investigate.

The cause of the reported fire remains unclear, and there were no immediate details regarding injuries, evacuations, or the extent of any damage.

The incident remains under investigation.
