Fire Prompts Evacuation at Medford Twp. ShopRite

Medford

ShopRite reopened Wednesday evening after a fire prompted an evacuation of the supermarket.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the ShopRite, on SH70, for a report of a fire in the receiving/loading area of the store yesterday around 9:53 p.m.

Upon arrival, the building was quickly evacuated, and an active fire was located in the rear receiving room of the establishment. The fire was quickly extinguished by employees and police using fire extinguishers.

Medford Fire Department arrived a short time after and contained the remaining fire and prevented further damage.

An investigation by the Medford Township Fire Marshall determined that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction involving a charging device for floor cleaning and maintenance machines.

The ShopRite was later authorized to return to normal business after being cleared by the Burlington County Health Inspector.
