Fire Destroys Newark North Ward Apartments, Restaurant

Fire officials in Newark announced that firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire in the North Ward early this morning.

According to authorities, at approximately 10:58 p.m. last night, firefighters responded to a two-story mixed use building at 848 Summer Avenue on a report of a fire.

The fire was located on the building’s second floor and roof.

Three families, consisting of seven adults and one child, were evacuated and displaced from the building, which also houses a grocery store and restaurant on the first floor.

Four firefighters suffered minor injuries with three transported to University Hospital for treatment and released.

The fourth remained on duty. No other injuries were reported.

The fire was deemed under control at approximately 1:22 a.m.

The arson units of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark Fire Division are investigating the exact cause of the fire.
