FATAL WEEKEND SHOOTING DOESN'T APPEAR RANDOM PROSECUTOR SAYS

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Sheilah A. Coley announced today that the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating a fatal shooting.
 
On Sunday, May 4, Alexander Toledo, 27, of Newark was fatally shot in the 200 block of North 7th Street. He was approached by an unidentified male and shot several times outside in a residential area.
 
Police were called at approximately 1:08 p.m. Toledo was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 1:25 p.m.
 
At this time no arrests have been made and no motive has been determined.
 
“It does not appear to be a random shooting,’’ said Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly.
 
Additional information will be released when it becomes available. The investigation is active and ongoing.
