Elizabeth Man Charged with Crash that Killed Newark Man, Teen Brother

Newark

An Elizabeth man is charged for his role in a fatal motor vehicle crash that killed two people from Newark in June of last year.

Officials said on June 15, 2021, at approximately 11:30 p.m. Jose Reyes-Morales, 33, was driving a 2017 BMW 330I northbound on Route 1 when it collided with a 2004 Mazda 3 at the intersection with Morses Mill Road.

Fatal crash

The occupants of the Mazda, Manuel Green, 22, and his brother Clarence Green, 15, were both killed in the crash.

“A crash like this is difficult and tragic for everyone involved,” said Police Chief David Hart.

“Hopefully, the bringing forth of these charges will bring some sense of comfort to the Green family as they continue to endure this incredible loss.”

An investigation led by the Linden Police Traffic Bureau, in coordination with the Union County Homicide Task Force, culminated in charges against Reyes-Morales for two counts of second-degree reckless vehicular homicide.

Crash

He was arrested at his home without incident on February 21, 2022, and remanded to the Union County Jail pending an appearance in Superior Court.

These criminal charges are mere accusations.

Every defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
