Authorities in East Orange are investigating a shooting that injured two victims in a section of the city on Saturday night.
Residents on Steuben Street said a gunman arrived in the neighborhood and fired multiple shots in the direction of several people around 10:30 p.m.
Police scrambled to the scene and closed the area off after locating a female victim suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot injury and a male struck by a bullet at that location.
The pair were taken to the hospital where doctors treated, then released them, East Orange city officials confirmed.
According to residents, the male victim was reportedly shielding a female from gunfire when he was struck.
Residents said bullets struck as many as four people during the carnage, but city officials countered by saying only two were hospitalized.
The motive for the attack is under investigation.
