East Newark Fire Destroys Duplex Home; Residents Evacuated

A multi-alarm fire that broke out overnight in the 200 block of Grant Ave. sent firefighters from several Hudson County municipalities to the scene shortly before 11 p.m.

Heavy fire broke out in the rear of a  large two-story duplex home located at 246 Grant Ave. and quickly spread to the East Newark Municipal Garage sent crews from Secaucus, Harrison, and Jersey City among others.  

Quick response by firefighters had crews knock down fire that began to extend to other homes but the ferocious blaze spread through the original fire building before crews could knock down the blaze about two hours later. Thick smoke that blanketed the area had several residents temporarily evacuated. 

There were no reported injuries as of 4 a.m. this morning and crews were able to rescue at least one pet. 

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
