Newark police are investigating a shots-fired incident early Saturday morning in the city’s South Ward.
Authorities said gunfire broke out around 4:07 a.m. near the intersection of Empire Street and Victoria Street, just outside Weequahic Park.
Responding officers secured the scene after locating multiple shell casings on the ground.
According to preliminary information, a victim told police that a gunman pulled up and fired several rounds in his direction before fleeing.
The victim was not struck and was able to escape to safety, officials said.

The motive for the shooting remains under active investigation by the Newark Police Department.
