Early Morning Shooting Kills One in Newark's South Ward

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation into a shooting that left a male victim dead in Newark's South Ward Sunday morning.

According to a preliminary investigation, police responded to multiple rounds of gunfire that rang out near 75 Elizabeth Avenue just before 4 a.m.

When units arrived at the scene, they immediately contacted the county agency after officers found an unconscious and unresponsive male lying on the ground, suffering bullet wounds in his head at that location.

Police say the victim was pronounced dead a short time later. Units searched the area for suspects, but there were no arrests reported.

The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing.
