Detectives for The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into a shooting that killed a male victim in a neighborhood in Newark early Friday morning.
According to officials, the shooting happened at approximately 1:40 a.m. in the vicinity of 160 Mout Prospect Street where a ShotSpotter activation alerted police of shots fired.
First arriving police officer found a male victim suffering multiple gunshot wounds at that location according to officials.
Medical personnel provided life-saving techniques on the victim before EMS rushed him to University Hospital where doctors pronounced the victim dead shortly after arrival.
Police believe a black or dark-colored Range Rover occupied by two to three masked males arrived in the area and began to fire shots at the victim.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
