Firefighters in Summit prevented an e-bike fire from spreading through a two-family home Monday evening after neighbors reported hearing an explosion and seeing flames on the front porch.

According to Summit Fire Department officials, crews were dispatched to a residence on Broad Street at approximately 6:31 p.m. on October 26 after residents across the street called 911 to report the incident.
Witnesses reported seeing an explosion followed by flames and smoke that appeared to be entering the home.
Firefighters arrived within three minutes and located the burning e-bike on the porch.
Crews brought the fire under control by approximately 7:02 p.m., limiting damage to the porch and preventing flames from spreading to other areas of the residence.
Officials said two occupants were evaluated by the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad but declined further medical treatment.
Union County Hazmat responded to safely remove and dispose of the damaged e-bike and its battery.
Firefighters from Millburn and Springfield assisted at the scene, while Union and New Providence fire departments provided additional coverage during the emergency.
Summit Fire Chief Brian Harnois credited the quick response with preventing more extensive damage.
“Thankfully, our crews arrived in time to get the fire under control before it could spread to the rest of the home,” Harnois said.
The chief also reminded residents to use manufacturer-approved chargers and batteries and follow proper storage and disposal practices to reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.
No serious injuries were reported.
