DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Threat Evacuates Newark Central Ward High School

A threat phoned into a Newark Central Ward school this afternoon had school officials evacuate the building as police searched for possible evidence.

According to preliminary report, police were called to the nation's first school of the visual and performing arts school -Arts High School- located in the 500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard at approximately 1:10 p.m. when an unidentified caller reportedly told a receptionist that an explosive could be found in the rear of the school.

School administrators jumped into appropriate action and orderly evacuated staff and students then contacted the Newark Police Department.

Students were moved just across the street to The Willing Heart Community Care Center where staff inside the building provided heat and a comfortable place for students to wait until police cleared the building.

As of 1:45 p.m., the Arts High School building was not cleared for entry.

UPDATE 2:46pm All Clear, no explosives.

The incident remains under investigation.
