DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Police Involved Shooting in Newark's West Ward

There is a significant police presence in the 400 block South 17th Street where authorities are investigating a shooting that involved a police officer at this time.

Details regarding what exactly occurred are limited but according to preliminary reports, shortly before 9:10 p.m., EMS transported one person to University Hospital in an unknown condition after a police officer fired at least one shot at the male, striking him.

There is a car crash at that location with two additional uninjured suspects in police custody.

Police have a crime scene established with several blocks taped off on South Orange Avenue where the suspects crashed a vehicle.

A civilian is being transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries sustained from the crash.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an incident tonight in which detectives shot a suspect who was armed with a gun.

Detectives from the Department’s Major Crimes Division, in the area of South Orange Avenue, were investigating shootings and robberies when they approached a suspect vehicle. As they approached, they observed one of the occupants armed with a gun.

A detective fired his weapon, striking the armed suspect after which the suspect’s weapon was recovered. This is an active and ongoing investigation to be conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
