There is a crime scene established that stretches several blocks in Newark's West Ward as newark Police investigate a shooting that has a male victim fighting for his life this afternoon.
Gunfire erupted in the vicinity of West End Avenue near 18th Avenue at approximately 1:40 p.m. sending police to the scene where officers arrived at the scene and found the victim suffering gunshot wounds.
EMS arrived at the scene to transport the victim to the hospital according to reports.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation. The suspect remains at-large.
**UPDATE: 3:16 p.m.** Essex County Prosecutor's Office officials have confirmed a homicide investigation for one (1) male victim.
