DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: Gunfire Strikes Male in Newark’s South Ward

There is an active investigation and search for a suspect who fired several rounds in the direction of a male, striking him at a location in the city’s South Ward this evening.

Reports of shots fired rang out in the 200 block of Peshine Avenue at around 5 p.m. sending police to the scene where they found a male victim suffering gunshot wounds.

EMS rushed the victim to University Hospital in life-threatening condition.

Police say a black male who was last seen wearing a blue top and black pants ran from the scene immediately after the shooting.

The motive for the shooting has not been determined.

Avoid the area for the police investigation.

UPDATE 6:22 PM This is now a homicide investigation with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office leading.

UPDATE 7:02 PM Rhe victim's body is still at the scene of the shooting.
