Police in Newark are looking for a Burgundy Kia Sorento occupied by as many as four males who carjacked a woman in Newark's West Ward then fired a gunshot that struck her in the chest while a child looked on in horror.
The incident happened at around 11 p.m. in the 300 block of South 20th Street where the suspects carjacked the woman then fired at least one round at her according to reports.
EMS rushed the unconscious and unresponsive woman to University Hospital in serious condition.
The child was taken to the hospital for observation but did not suffer a gunshot wound reports said.
Police have a crime scene established in the area at this time.
UPDATE 11:26 pm NJ, this is a homicide investigation with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office leading.
