Police are on the scene investigating a shots-fired incident with a male victim injured in Newark's Vailsburg section at this time.
It happened just before 4 p.m. in the vicinity of Alexander Street and 18th Avenue, where residents dialed 911 after hearing gunfire erupt.
Newark West Ward Police officers arrived and found the victim suffering a bullet wound in his back at that location.
Police notified Irvington after witnesses said the suspect fled the scene on foot towards the Township.
The extent of the victim’s injuries is reported as serious.
There are no other injuries reported.
