Authorities in Newark are on the search for an  armed suspect who opened fire in Newark's West Ward neighborhood, leaving one male severely injured.

The incident, which occurred just before 6:45 p.m. in the 20’s block of Brookdale Avenue, sent concerned through the community after residents heard the gunfire.

The rapid response from Newark Police was facilitated by the ShotSpotter detector device, which detected the multiple rounds of gunfire and automatically alerted law enforcement.

This technology, aimed at curtailing gun violence, played a crucial role in the immediate deployment of officers to the scene.

Upon their arrival, police discovered a male victim with significant injuries. EMS promptly transported the injured individual to University Hospital for urgent medical care.

Newark Police cordoned off the surrounding area to comb for evidence, hoping to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.

Currently, the armed suspect remains at large.
