Update 6:16 p.m. Driver of commercial vehicle located a short distance away and is cooperating with police.
A tragic crash claimed the life of a young boy in Scotch Plains this afternoon, authorities confirmed.
According to preliminary information released by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, emergency responders rushed to the intersection of Mountain Avenue and Mountainview Avenue just before 2:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a pedestrian struck.
When officers arrived, they found a heavily damaged electric bike and a juvenile suffering severe injuries.
First responders immediately administered CPR before rushing the boy to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Officials said the victim, believed to be around 12 or 13 years old and a resident of Scotch Plains, had been struck by a vehicle whose driver was not immediately at the scene the scene.
The Union County Prosecutor’s Office and Scotch Plains Police Department are actively investigating the incident.
