Police and detectives are investigating a shooting that left a 16-year-old girl wounded Sunday evening near a basketball game in Newark's Central Ward.

Authorities were called to the vicinity of Prince Street and Court Street just before 8 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired in the area where the popular Zoo Crew basketball tournament was taking place.
When officers arrived, they encountered large crowds fleeing the scene and quickly established a perimeter around the area.
During the investigation, police learned that a 16-year-old female had been struck by gunfire.
The victim was transported to University Hospital, where she was undergoing surgery Sunday night.
Her condition has not been released.
Witnesses told RLS Media that the shooting did not occur on the basketball court itself but just outside the entrance gates, where people were either attending the game, attempting to enter, or gathering nearby.
Several minor injuries were also reported as spectators ran from the area, with some individuals reportedly falling or tripping in the chaos that followed the gunfire.
Authorities have not released information regarding a possible suspect or what may have led to the shooting.
The incident remains under an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
