Critical Injuries for Victim of Newark's South Ward Shooting

An early morning shooting that happened in the city's South Ward left a man in critical condition.

Reports of shots fired sent a large police presence to the 500 block of Mapes Ave. at around 4:15 a.m. where they located a male victim injured from apparent gunfire.

According to a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the victim was self-transported to Beth Israel Hospital where his injuries were considered life threatening.

Police setup a crime scene in the area and launched an investigation.

There were no arrests reported.

The victim's identity has not been released.
