Crash Investigation Shuts Down Route 21 Southbound in Nutley After Pedestrian Hit

Authorities are investigating a serious pedestrian strike that shut down all southbound lanes on a busy Essex County roadway early Tuesday morning.

Just before 4:30 a.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the southbound side of Route 21 near mile marker 9 in Nutley following reports of a crash. 

Upon arrival, crews found an unidentified individual suffering from severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle.

 

The victim’s injuries were described as serious, though the full extent had not been confirmed as of 5 a.m.

 

Police and county investigators have closed all southbound lanes in the area as they work to determine what led up to the incident.

 

Drivers heading out for the early morning commute should expect delays and are urged to seek alternate routes if possible.
