As New Jersey braces for a potential NJ Transit rail strike set to commence on Friday, May 16, communities across the state are mobilizing to mitigate the anticipated disruption.
The strike, stemming from unresolved wage negotiations between NJ Transit and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, threatens to halt all commuter train services, impacting approximately 350,000 daily riders .

In response, towns like Bloomfield are proactively implementing contingency plans to support their commuting residents. Bloomfield officials have announced an expansion of their local shuttle bus service, which will reroute to transport commuters to the Grove Street Light Rail Station.
Officials told RLS Media that this station connects to Newark Penn Station and the PATH Train into Manhattan. To ease the burden on commuters, the township will waive the usual $0.50 per ride fee for the duration of the contingency service.
The Honorable Mayor Jenny Mundell emphasized the town’s commitment to its residents, stating:
“While we remain hopeful that NJ Transit and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers reach a fair agreement, we are not waiting to act. Our team is putting contingency plans in place to support our residents with alternate transit options.”
The potential strike’s impact extends beyond daily commutes. NJ Transit has already canceled train and bus services to MetLife Stadium for Shakira’s concerts on May 15 and 16, leaving thousands of fans to seek alternative transportation.
Future events, such as Beyoncé’s scheduled performances at the same venue starting May 22, may also be affected if the strike persists.
NJ Transit’s contingency plan includes limited bus services and park-and-ride options, but these measures are expected to accommodate only about 20% of the usual rail passengers.
Commuters are advised to work from home if possible and to stay informed through NJ Transit’s official channels.

As negotiations continue under federal mediation, the state remains hopeful for a resolution. Governor Phil Murphy has indicated that all options, including declaring a state of emergency, are on the table to address the potential crisis.
