A Cliffwood resident has been sentenced to five decades in state prison for the deadly stabbing of a Newark man last year, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II announced that 35-year-old Terrance Bailey received a 50-year sentence in New Jersey State Prison for the killing of 28-year-old Daniel Haas Jr.

The sentencing was handed down by Superior Court Judge Arthur Batista, who also presided over the trial.
Authorities said the violent incident took place on February 20, 2024, when Bailey and an unidentified accomplice chased Haas while wielding a firearm on Cathedral Court in Newark.
The pair caught up to Haas, and Bailey fatally attacked him with a machete-style knife. The second suspect has not yet been identified or apprehended.
“This was a brutal and heinous attack,” said Assistant Prosecutor Bollettieri, who led the case.
“The State hopes that this 50-year sentence will help provide a sense of closure to the family of Daniel Haas Jr., and deter others from committing such violent acts in the future.”

Bailey will be required to serve 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole, in accordance with the No Early Release Act.
