Police are investigating a shooting incident that injured a child in Newark’s South Ward on Saturday night.
According to police, the child, around 11-years-old, suffered non-life-threatening injuries when heavily armed men arrived in the single-digit block of Goodwin Avenue and began repeatedly firing at unknown targets.
Newark South Ward Police arrived at the scene and closed off the block after finding shell casings and the injured boy.
Police say the child was not shot but suffered his injuries after shrapnel struck him during the shooting that occurred around 8:20 p.m.
According to officials, police were notified of the shooting after a ShotSpotter device alerted them of gunfire in that section of the city.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
