Child Held Hostage in Newark Apartment Building

A man accused of robbing a building resident, released a boy he reportedly took hostage in Newark.

According to police, officers responded to the New Community Douglas Homes on Hill Street for a report of a robbery just after 5 p.m.

Shortly after building security saw the alleged suspect man with a 7- or 8-year-old boy before he barricaded himself in a 10th-floor apartment.

Negotiators responded to the scene and managed to convince the man into releasing the boy in just under an hour.

The 30-year-old man came out peacefully just before 8 p.m.

Police charged the 30-year-old Newark resident with robbery, possession of weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, and assault.

According to initial reports, the suspect reportedly robbed one of the building residents in the elevator earlier that evening.
