A Camden man has been charged in connection with the death of another inmate following an assault inside the Camden County Correctional Facility, according to information released by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.

Authorities said 42-year-old Edward D. Brooks of Newark, Delaware, was found unresponsive in his bunk around 7:51 a.m. on Friday, June 13, 2025.
He was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
An investigation by the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit determined that Brooks had been struck multiple times with a closed fist by fellow inmate Shaquan Shields, 29, of Camden.
The assault occurred around 1:06 p.m. the previous day, based on surveillance video reviewed by investigators.
Shields was formally charged with second-degree manslaughter on Tuesday, June 17, and remains in custody at the facility. A detention hearing will be scheduled in Superior Court.

The case remains under active investigation.
