UPDATED: Bullets Strike Charter School in Newark

Newark

Police in Newark are investigating a shots fired incident that had bullets strike a Charter school in Newark Friday.

Authorities have not released many details on the incident and officials at the school reached by phone did not deny the incident but referred all questions to Newark Police. According to preliminary reports, police were called to Bedford Street side of the New Horizon Charter School to investigate a bullet that entered a window at the school on Friday afternoon.

Officers arrived and requested a crime scene unit after the finding evidence of the incident but did not find any injured victims according to reports.

According to a source who spoke to our staff while at the scene earlier today, police were called back to New Horizon just before 12:30 p.m. when workers doing construction on the building found projectiles through the wall on the upper floors of the school.

Police would not confirm if the shooting took place on the inside of the building or if there was a shooting at the New Community Corporation Housing Development that struck the building.

New Horizon Charter School officials would not confirm if the incident resulted in a school lockdown.

On Friday night, a Newark Police car was observed on the 14th Avenue side of New Community and The New Horizon Charter School engaged in possible shooter suppression monitoring for the area. In January, a shots fired incident connected on a male causing non-life threatening injuries according to a statement released by Newark Police.

School officials and police placed the school on lockdown, but there were no injuries to staff or students.

Today's incident remains under investigation.

**UPDATE:** Employees speaking anonymity told our staff that several people inside the school heard noises that sounded like gunfire but my colleagues and I thought it was just the men outside doing construction on the building. "The school was placed on lockdown and students that I could see were safe, but police or school officials did not say anything after that. This is disturbing to learn that they did not even care to let us know what was going on and kept it a secret."

"The area always something going on at this school and in the area."

The staff member could not confirm if the shooting occurred inside the school building.

Police and school officials have not released anything confirming the incident, but during a brief phone conversation, New Horizon School officials would only point in the direction of Newark Police for any information.
