Authorities in Bloomfield have taken a suspect into custody following a violent stabbing that left a juvenile seriously injured earlier this week.
Police responded on February 17, 2026, at approximately 12:57 p.m., to reports of a stabbing in the area of Walnut Street.
Upon arrival, officers located a juvenile suffering from multiple stab wounds. Officers immediately began administering first aid while securing the scene.
The Bloomfield Fire Department and Bloomfield EMS responded to assist. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is currently recovering, according to officials.
Following what police described as an intensive investigation, detectives developed probable cause to charge Mr. Johan C. Ibarra in connection with the incident. Ibarra was taken into custody at approximately 8:30 p.m. on February 18, 2026.
He was formally charged, processed, and transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility.
Bloomfield Police Chief George Ricci praised the swift actions of officers, noting their immediate response in providing medical aid and quickly identifying and arresting the suspect.
He emphasized the department’s continued commitment to protecting the community and holding offenders accountable.
Bloomfield Mayor Jenny Mundell also thanked police, firefighters, and EMS personnel for their rapid response and care provided to the victim.
She described the incident as deeply upsetting for the township and reaffirmed that the safety of residents, particularly young people, remains a top priority.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not released additional details at this time.
