UPDATE: 5:44 p.m. This is a confirmed Police involved shooting and the condition of the victim could not be confirmed by the prosecutor’s office.
Police in Newark are on the scene of a distressing incident near the intersection of South 13th Street and 18th Avenue, inside West Side Park, where a male was found with a gunshot wound to his head shortly before 3:55 p.m.
The incident occurred when an officer opened fire on the victim.
The Essex County Sheriff's Office has been alerted to the situation and is collaborating with local authorities to gather information and evidence.
Unfortunately, the victim sustained severe injuries from the gunshot wound and was rushed to University Hospital for medical treatment.
