A heavy police presence has been reported in a section of Newark Sunday morning as authorities investigate a shooting that left at least three people wounded and led to a reported barricade situation.
According to preliminary information, shortly before 9:30 a.m., Newark Police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of 772 Bergen Street.
When officers arrived, they reportedly found at least three people suffering from gunshot wounds. The conditions of the victims have not yet been confirmed.
Witnesses at the scene reportedly told police that the suspected shooter ran inside a residence following the shooting.
Newark’s tactical unit was summoned to the scene and officers have surrounded the house while attempting to get the individual to come outside.
It is being reported that the suspect was is also injured by gunfire but it’s no clear if the injuries are self inflicted or police involved at this time.
Details regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain limited as police continue their investigation.
Residents and motorists should expect a significant police presence in the area while the situation remains active.
