BREAKING NEWARK NJ: Serious Injuries Reported for Child Shot in Newark

A child, around the age of 6-years-old, is being rushed to University Hospital after gunfire rang out on a busy avenue in Newark this afternoon.

Reports of shots fired sent police to the 400 block of Central Avenue where they found the child suffering a gunshot wound to the stomach shortly before 6 pm.

One adult male victim was found in a nearby grocery store suffering a gunshot wound. EMS rushed him to the hospital in an unknown condition.

There is massive police presence at the scene investigating with the Central Avenue blocked at First St. heading westbound and West Market heading eastbound.

We will have more as soon as it develops.

UPDATE 6:17 p.m. The male victim is suffering non-life threatening injuries with a foot and knee injury. There are reports of a third victim self-transported to University Hospital. A dark colored vehicle fled the area immediately after the shooting.

UPDATED 6:37 pm Information is coming in slowly with now three (3) total victims being reported (including the child). One of the victims reportedly arrived at University Hospital by private vehicle. All non-life threatening as of 6:29 p.m

UPDATED 7:15 pm Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose are at the scene of a shooting of two adult males and a 6-year old that occurred today at Central Avenue and 3rd Street.

The shooting occurred approximately 5:45 p.m. when three victims were shot and transported to University Hospital. Each is listed in stable condition.

No suspects or motives have been identified in this incident. This investigation is active.
