BREAKING NEWARK NJ: Overnight Gunfire Strikes Child in Newark

Police in Newark are investigating an overnight shooting that connected on a young child in Newark's South Ward.

Multiple rounds of gunfire rang out in the vicinity of Treacy and Avon avenues at approximately midnight sending police and emergency responders to the scene where they found a child -around the age of 5-years-old- suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.

EMS rushed the girl to University Hospital where doctors began treating her injuries then listed her in stable condition.

Police taped off the area where they began a massive search for suspects responsible for the shooting. Residents in the area say they could not determine if the loud popping noises were fireworks or gunfire after hearing nearly a dozen of them.

According to preliminary reports, the child is expected to survive her injuries. There was at least one other person suffering injuries at the scene but police attempting to determine if this individual was shot at this time.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. There were no arrests according to authorities.
