BREAKING NEWARK NJ: Gunfire Erupts in Downtown Newark; Victim Shot Dead

Expect massive traffic delays in downtown Newark as police and investigators are on the scene of a shots fired incident with a confirmed connection on a male at this time.

It happened at around 9:45 a.m. on Broad and Market streets where two black male suspects -one wearing a black face mask and the other wearing a gray hoodie- opened fire on the victim causing severe injuries.

The suspects sprinted away front the scene and were last observed on Halsey Street.

Police closed down the area as officers canvassed stores and buses in search for the suspects who are considered armed and dangerous at this time.

Avoid this section of the downtown if you can for the investigation.

**ECPO UPDATE 11:41:** This is a confirmed homicide investigation. The victim transitioned at 11:04 a.m.

UPDATE 12:15PM NEWARK – Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced that the shooting this morning near the intersection of Broad Street and Market Street was not random and that the victim was targeted.

“We had multiple officers in the area, as we always do, and they responded immediately,” Ambrose said. “This appears to be drug-related and we are pursuing active leads at this moment.”
