There is a homicide investigation underway in a Newark neighborhood as police are on the scene of a shooting with one person struck at this time.
Police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Frelinghuysen Avenue and East Peddie Street before 1:45 pm where officers located the unconscious and unresponsive victim suffering gunshot wounds at that location.
Medical staff pronounced the victim dead a short time ago according to preliminary reports.
Police have a crime scene established with Concord Street and Empire Street taped off for the investigation.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has been informed of the incident.
The motive for the shooting has not been released.
