Police and detectives were on the scene of a shooting that has a man suffering life-threatening injuries at this time in a neighborhood in the city.
Residents were awakened by two loud popping noises then emergency responders' sirens in the 100 block of North 7th Street shortly before 6 a.m.
Police responded to the scene found an unconscious and unresponsive male victim laying on the ground shot at that location.
According to preliminary reports, a black male suspect last observed wearing a dark shirt, blue jeans, and long dreads running from the scene westbound on North 7th Street.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed a homicide investigation.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
