BREAKING NEWARK: Man Reportedly Fires Shots at Police in Newark's West Ward

Police are surrounding a West Ward community where they are searching for a shooting suspect. 

Gunfire erupted in the 100 block of Boylan Street shortly before 5:15 p.m sending scores of police to the scene where they began a search for a male suspect who reportedly fired several rounds at police then fled the scene.  

Police closed off the neighborhood where they began a search for a black male who was last seen wearing a red hoodie and black pants.

None of the officers were struck by gunfire. Residents said there is a person laying on the ground at this time but it is unknown if the person has been shot. 

A K-9 unit has been called to the scene to assist in the search.
