BREAKING NEWARK: Gunfire Strikes Male in Newark’s Central Ward

There is an active crime scene established at a shooting scene with a male struck by bullets in the city’s Central Ward at this time.

According to police, gunfire rang out at New Community Corporation near Hayes Street at around 1:32 p.m.

Police arrived at the scene and found a dark-colored vehicle speeding away from the scene. During a pursuit, the suspect crashed the vehicle in the area of Broad and South Street. One male is in custody.

Police say the extent of the shooting victim is considered serious and they believe one other person may have been shot and self-transported to the hospital.

Springfield Avenue from Irvine Turner is being shut down at this time.

UPDATE: There is a second person who just entered University Hospital suffering bullet wounds. Two victims total. Several cars struck by bullets.

UPDATE 2:31pm: This is a homicide investigation for one male victim with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office leading.
