Police have a crime scene established and an investigation underway into a shooting that injured a male victim in a section of Newark's North Ward a short time ago.
According to a preliminary investigation, at approximately 12:10 p.m., an off-duty police officer notified headquarters of a shooting near 657 North 5th Street at Heller Parkway.
Back-up police units arrived and found the victim suffering a non-life threatening bullet wound near his ankle and multiple shell casings on the ground at that location.
Police chased engaged in a foot pursuit of a potential suspect then detained him near the Spanish Manor. Authorities said a weapon was found on Rose and Franklin avenues.
Police say the incident began with a verbal pursuit that escalated into the shooting.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
