Police are investigating a shooting that left a man critically injured in Downtown Newark Monday night.

According to preliminary reports, at approximately 8:25 p.m., a ShotSpotter device detected gunfire in the 80s block of Park Place, prompting Newark Police officers to respond and canvas the surrounding area.
During the search, officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest near Broad and Market streets, several blocks from where the ShotSpotter activation was initially detected.
EMS was requested on a rush, and the victim was transported to University Hospital. His condition has been reported as critical.
Preliminary information indicates the suspect fled the scene and remains at large.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under active and ongoing investigation.
